Interstate Transport Responds to Department of Homeland Security Needs in Haiti

The Department of Homeland Security and FDEM call on Interstate Transport Resources to Assist Earthquake Victims

Saint Petersburg, Florida - January 19, 2010

The Department of Homeland Security and Florida Division of Emergency Management have once again called on the expertise of Interstate's Emergency Response Team to assist with an immediate crisis.  While the world watched the horrific events unfold in Haiti following the massive earthquake that devastated the country, Interstate sprang into action to offer relief to the survivors of the disaster.

Within four hours of being contacted by the Department of Homeland Security, Interstate Transport's Disaster Management Team had coordinated the loading of cots and pillows at the State Logistics Response Center in Orlando.  Within eleven hours, those supplies had been delivered to the Department of Homeland Security Coordination Center in Miami and were bound for Haiti.

Interstate Transport was called upon to provide emergency transportation services to the Department of Homeland Security whose efforts to supply the devastated country with relief items have been thwarted by a lack of communication within Haiti and a bottle neck of supply and military transportation surrounding the country's main airport.  While the survivors need the most essential items for survival, including water, food and medical supplies, attempts to ship these items into the country have been frustrated by the complete devastation of the country's infrastructure.  The airport has few landing slots that are open and limited space for planes to unload.  Moreover, the main port is closed and will remain closed for the foreseeable future.  Even efforts to deliver relief supplies by truck from the Dominican Republic have been stymied due to the fact that the single main road is backed up and damaged, according to reports.  The country's fuel supply has been depleted and few serviceable tractors remain to haul cargo trailers and shipping containers that have managed to make their way into the country.

Interstate Transport's Disaster Management Team remains on high alert for further missions and is working 24-hours a day to assist the Department of Homeland Security, FEMA and Florida Division of Emergency Management in their efforts to bring relief to the ravaged nation of Haiti.  Interstate Transport CEO, Tim Higham, speaks for the entire team.  "In Florida, we certainly know what a disaster is like to live through and I know that the citizens of Florida feel the Haitians' pain during this time of confusion and heartbreak.  The Department of Homeland Security and FEMA can continue to rely on the expertise of companies like ours and Florida's Division of Emergency Management who are well practiced in swift disaster response."
