The St. Petersburg Downtown Improvement District (SPDID) is a place-based management nonprofit dedicated to the long-term vitality, cleanliness, and quality of downtown St. Pete's public spaces. Through coordinated ambassador services, maintenance, and close collaboration with City departments, downtown businesses, cultural institutions, residents, and visitors, SPDID works to enhance the everyday experience of being downtown.
Improvement districts like SPDID exist in over 1,000 communities across the country.. They're typically created at the request of local property owners seeking enhanced services beyond what local government can provide, with a board of property owners determining the district's priorities and how funds are allocated. For SPDID, current priorities include maintenance & hospitality programs and enhanced public space initiatives through programming & capital improvements.. These priorities can evolve as downtown's needs change over time. The proposed boundaries for the district run approximately from Third Avenue N. to Fourth Avenue S., and Fifth Street N. to the waterfront.
One of SPDID's most visible early projects is already underway: with capital improvements to the Williams Park bandshell, which began in April and remain on schedule for substantial completion by November. The renovated bandshell will help set the stage for Winter Wonder, downtown's upcoming holiday program launching November 20th. Shaun Drinkard, LPM is CEO of SPDIDand also serves as Vice President of the St. Petersburg Downtown Partnership. With nearly two decades of experience in downtown management, Shaun oversees SPDID's planning, stakeholder engagement, capital improvements, and programming for key public spaces including Williams Park. His background in landscape architecture and urban design informs a strategic, placemaking-driven approach, and he's professionally certified as a Leader in Place Management by the International Downtown Association, where he also serves on the Board of Directors.
