Named for its location on 22nd Street South, the Deuces Corridor includes the Deuces Live Main Street District between 8th and 15th Avenues South. The Main Street District honors the lively and prosperous African-American community of South St. Petersburg during the early 20th century. The African American Heritage Trail, a walking trail on and around the corridor provides a glimpse into St. Petersburg history. The trail includes the historic Manhattan Casino, where residents once caught performances by Duke Ellington and Billie Holiday. A new I-Mix zone has been proposed that would add residential options and create a more diversified, vibrant and resilient neighborhood economy. Activities underway include redevelopment of Tangerine Plaza, reopening of 22 South Food Hall, a new Legacy Center for the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance of St. Petersburg and two new pavilion parks. Additionally, Deuces Rising (formerly Commerce Park), will house the new Woodson African American Museum of Florida and Sankofa on the Deuces—a mixed-use development that includes 26 townhomes.
“One of my guiding principles is the following quote: ‘I plant trees knowing that my grandchildren will eat the fruit and find comfort in its shade.’ I invested financially in the community hoping to see its redevelopment, comfortable with the knowledge I was planting a tree.”
